Finally got consistent depth of cut with my Shapeoko 4
Was fighting Z inconsistency for months. Turned out to be a loose eccentric nut on the Z-axis wheel. Sharing the fix because I couldn't find it documented anywhere.

Had the same issue on my X-Carve! It was the pinion gear set screw. These things drive you insane until you find the root cause.
